Bikini Bottom is a fictional city (and I hate it) located at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, underneath the Bikini Atoll. So I guess you already know why it's called 'Bikini Bottom'.
Although the population but the creator of the show, Stepehen Hillenburg said that Bikini Bottom is a large city. If you have watched the episode wherein SpongeBob created a one-time Pretty Patties, over 46,853 customers came in. In which almost everyone from the city is there which suggests there is a total population of 50,000 Bikini Bottomites!
Have you noticed Bikini Bottom's geography? It is actually similar to a common city. It has mountains, dense forests, lakes, lagoons, caves, grasslands, reefs and rivers. And it is composed of
scrap metals or whatever stuff that may have been fallen down from the surface. Which depicts an undersea life full of scrap living.
